When Winter means SADness For some of us, the winter doesn’t just mean the blahs, it means sadness. Severe Winter blues, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is a type of mood disorder characterized by more severe forms of Winter Blues symptoms. It is recognized by medical professionals and experts as a common mood disorder that affects people during the fall and winter months. People with SAD may feel constantly down and extremely fatigued. They may have difficulty concentrating, causing problems at work or at home. They may withdraw socially, over-sleep, gain weight and experience a decrease in their libido (sex drive). In more severe cases, they may have suicidal thoughts.

As with people who experience Winter Blues, those with SAD see their symptoms go away during the spring and summer.

How common is SAD? As many as 5% percent of people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and 10 to 20% suffer from sub-Syndromal Seasonal Affective Disorder (S-SAD), a milder form of SAD. Women are generally twice as likely to be affected by SAD and S-SAD, and the average age of onset is 23.

Treatments for SAD Because lack of exposure to light during the gray and dark days of winter has long been linked to SAD, a commonly recommended treatment is light therapy. In fact, for more than three decades medical practitioners have been recommending light therapy to address the symptoms of SAD.

Other treatments for SAD include antidepressant medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and hormone supplementation. For many, some of these treatments options are either considered unsafe, unaffordable or inconvenient.
